Deep Forest
Oil on canvas
2009 – 2014
In Deep Forest series, the artist tries to create an image of self-criticism.
A gigantic face is vaguely distinguishable through the jungle, valley, vortex, waterfall and dense foliage full of the canvas. The face is visualized yet intangible. It is both observing and self-reflecting. Human lives in this world, being a part of this world, and the world is everything that forms human, a conception of Chinese philosophy that “The greatest image is formless.” An elf-like child figure can be seen in the centre of the canvas, surrounded by nature in an incongruous and contradictive manner, presenting a western notion of object relationships between nature and human.
The different eastern and western perception of subjectivities and world are paradoxically juxtaposed and entangled in the artist's works, and thus sparks the long-standing thinking of the relationship between nature and human.
