The River Runs through It

Oil on canvas

2011 – 2013

If mountains in Chinese landscape painting indicate the tribute to the natural force of creation, then trees and water are the media to connect the nature and soul, projecting the everchanging emotions and sentiments. Renowned artists like Ma Yuan, Ni Zan and Wen Zhengming have projected a non-objective and non-subjective neutral temperament of trees and water.

The technological advancement of modern society has broken the long-lasting balance and co-existence between nature and human. Nature has become an object to be modified and exploited by human. Media like trees and water have been completely ignored.

In The River Runs through It series, the oil paint washes over the images again and again. Some are retained by colour sediments; some dissolve the thin and unstable colour layers. Trees grow with waste and clear water runs with pollution. Danger is closing in. The river in the ancient poem goes east, taking away one’s sadness to the vastness, but now the artificial river carries one’s desire into the void.
