Sun Yao’s art book, “Traces of Metaphor,” was published in conjunction with his solo exhibition, “Appearance,” in Germany. The book presents a comprehensive selection of 43 works from four of Sun’s notable series: Deep Forest, Oblivion, To The Stars, and River of Entropy.
The book is further enriched by two critical introductions: “Painting between Being and Nothingness” by curator Raul Zamudio and “Traces of Metaphor: Talking about Sun Yao’s Painting” by Loel Liao. These in-depth examinations provide a valuable understanding of Sun’s creative vision, offering readers a deeper insight into his artistic philosophy and the inspirations behind his captivating works.
Through these carefully curated works, Sun’s artistic practice is revealed, one that seamlessly merges the sublime aesthetics of Abstract Expressionism with the spiritual essence of Chinese landscape painting. On canvas, Sun constructs a poetic realm that exists between being and nothingness, inviting viewers to contemplate the ultimate questions of human existence.
